Ditmars-Steinway is the northernmost section of Astoria, bounded by Bowery Bay to the north and the East River to the west, and named for both Ditmars Boulevard — which honors Abram Ditmars, the first mayor of Long Island City — and Steinway Street, the main commercial thoroughfare that runs through the area. A middle-class residential neighborhood distinct from the company-town origins of the adjacent Steinway district, it retains a quieter character than central Astoria while remaining one of the more sought-after pockets of the neighborhood.
