Gravesend is one of Brooklyn's oldest neighborhoods, originally founded in 1645 by Lady Deborah Moody as one of the first towns in the American colonies to offer religious tolerance. Today it is a diverse, predominantly residential community with strong Italian American and Chinese American populations, anchored by Neptune Avenue's commercial strip and its proximity to Coney Island.
