Kips Bay

Manhattan

Kips Bay is a largely residential neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan, roughly bounded by 34th Street to the north, 23rd Street to the south, Third Avenue to the west, and the East River to the east, named for the Dutch settler Jacobus Kip whose farm once lined the shoreline. Today the neighborhood is known for its mix of high-rise apartment towers — including the bold brutalist Kips Bay Towers designed by I.M. Pei — medical institutions clustered around Bellevue Hospital, and a quiet, lived-in character that sets it apart from the frenetic pace of nearby Midtown.
