Le Petit Sénégal is a West African enclave within Central Harlem centered on the blocks surrounding West 116th Street between Malcolm X and Frederick Douglass Boulevards, home to a community that grew from virtually nothing in 1985 to over 6,500 residents by 2005. The neighborhood is the cultural and commercial heart of Harlem's West African immigrant community, with restaurants, markets, and shops reflecting the languages and traditions of Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and neighboring nations.
