Mill Rock is a tiny uninhabited island in the East River just off Manhattan's Upper East Side at 96th Street, sitting at the historically treacherous Hell Gate passage. Originally two islands with a 17th-century mill, it was dramatically reshaped in 1885 when the Army Corps of Engineers detonated one of the largest planned explosions in U.S. history to clear the channel for safe navigation.
