Ravenswood is a western Queens neighborhood along the East River between 36th Avenue and Hallets Cove, combining upland blocks of middle-income detached homes with a lowland stretch of towers-in-the-park public housing built adjacent to an industrial waterfront dominated by the massive Consolidated Edison generating station known as "Big Allis." Originally a Dutch settlement from 1651, it was absorbed into Long Island City in 1870 and has transitioned through aristocratic, industrial, and residential phases, with recent "Reimagine Ravenswood" planning efforts focused on clean energy redevelopment of its waterfront.
