Willowbrook is a suburban neighborhood in central Staten Island most widely known for the former Willowbrook State School, an institution whose documented abuses of residents with intellectual disabilities in the 1970s led to landmark federal disability rights legislation. Today the site is home to the College of Staten Island, and the surrounding area is a tranquil residential community near the Staten Island Greenbelt.
